Spiritual Direction

“The whole purpose of spiritual direction is to penetrate beneath the surface of a man's life, to get behind the façade of conventional gestures and attitudes which he presents to the world, and to bring out his inner spiritual freedom, his inmost truth, which is what we call the likeness of Christ in his soul.” Father Thomas Merton

What is Spiritual Direction?

“The Mystery we call God is just that - mystery; not mystery in the sense of an unknown, but eventually knowable, stranger, but mystery in the sense that God is too rich, too deep, and too loving to be knowable and is, therefore, God. Spiritual directors can be only helping companions to those who travel the way of such a God.” Father William A. Barry

Through active and reflective listening, a sacred companion walks with someone along the sometimes lonely path of discerning God’s presence in their life. It is a practice in which a trained guide helps someone go deeper in their relationship with God.

Who is Spiritual Direction for?

“If you do not have someone to guide you, to hold onto you during the times of not knowing, you will normally stay at your present level of growth.” Father Richard Rohr

Simply put, spiritual direction is for anyone who desires to grow into a deeper, more intentional, relationship with God.

How does a spiritual director differ from other spiritual relationships?

A spiritual director’s focus is on helping a directee notice God’s presence in their life and their reactions to that presence. Spiritual direction is not counseling, teaching or training, although recognizing God’s presence in one’s life and living from the heart is ultimately healing.

How does it work?

Sessions are 50mins and are generally once or twice a month, in-person or remotely. The sessions are confidential conversations where a directee reflects on their life and prayer and the sacred companion listens and asks contemplative questions to help discern God’s presence in life’s joys and trials.

What is the cost for spiritual direction?

For those who are able, contributions allow me to offer this ministry to anyone who needs it, while also maintaining my ongoing professional development. Typical contributions for spiritual direction are $60 - $85 per session, depending on your ability.
